Municipal Bereavement

It is with great sadness and shock to have lost the Speaker of Umzimkhulu Local Municipality, Cllr. Khaya Thobela in such a barbaric manner. He was brutally attacked at his homestead in Mfundweni Village of Umzimkhulu, on Thursday evening and eventually passed away on Sunday while in hospital.

"This inhuman, cowardice and merciless assassination of our Speaker did not ONLY rob us a Speaker of the Council but it has robbed us a true leader. As a Speaker of the Council, Cllr.Thobela always ensured accountability, transparency, respect, fruitful engagements during the council proceedings therefore his legacy will forever remain in our minds. Cllr. Thobela worked tirelessly to ensure that the community of Umzimkhulu and surroundings also benefit from the promises of the Government of the day. Ngwane, as he was affectionately known, played a huge role towards the successes of our municipality. His role in the country had been characterised by humble, love, respect and commitment. This is indeed a great loss to the people of Umzimkhulu as a whole. We wish to extend our sincere condolences to the Thobela family and entire Umzimkhulu." said the deeply sadden Mayor of Umzimkhulu Local Municipality, Cllr. Mphuthumi Mpabanga.
